Purpose of the role

The Financial Accountant reports to the Finance Manager and supports accurate, complete and timely financial reporting for Unifi Tanzania . The role takes ownership of day-to-day accounting activities, including the general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, fixed assets, statutory reporting and month-end processes. Working closely with the Finance Manager, the Financial Accountant helps ensure our financial information is accurate, well supported and compliant with IFRS, Group policies and local requirements.

Responsibilities 

  • Keep the Chart of Accounts accurate and in line with Group guidelines
  • Keep the General Ledger and Trial Balance accurate, complete and in line with IFRS, Group policies and statutory requirements
  • Prepare journals with the right supporting documents and approvals
  • Make sure transactions are recorded correctly and allocated to the right departments, cost centres and branches
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations and follow up on outstanding items
  • Review the Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet and investigate unusual movements or differences
  • Flag accounting risks or unresolved items early
  • Maintain the Fixed Asset Register, including additions, disposals, transfers and asset tagging
  • Reconcile the Fixed Asset Register to the General Ledger and check depreciation calculations
  • Prepare statutory and tax returns for review and submission, including Tanzania Revenue Authority requirements
  • Support Bank of Tanzania and other regulatory reporting
  • Complete regular bank reconciliations and investigate and resolve differences
  • Make sure supplier invoices are captured correctly and supplier accounts are reconciled monthly
  • Support supplier payments and make sure the right approval process is followed
  • Prepare accounting calculations including IFRS 16 leases, loan facility amortisations, income tax and withholding tax, with support where needed
  • Support month-end and year-end close
  • Prepare accurate information and supporting documents for internal and external audits.
  • Support monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting
  • Compare actual results to budgets, forecasts and previous periods and investigate material differences
  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting
  • Provide accurate financial information and analysis when needed
  • Help solve finance queries and support ad hoc finance projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
  • 2–4 years' relevant accounting or financial reporting experience
  • CPA, ACCA, CIMA or an equivalent professional accounting qualification, or progress towards one, would be advantageous
  • Good working knowledge of accounting principles and IFRS
  • Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, journals, balance sheet reconciliations and month-end processes
  • Exposure to statutory reporting, tax and audit processes
  • Experience using accounting systems such as Xero, NetSuite or similar would be advantageous
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills with the ability to spot differences and investigate what is driving them
  • High attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-moving environment
  • Comfortable working independently while knowing when to ask questions or escalate an issue
  • Clear communicator who works well with people across teams
  • Adaptable, resilient and comfortable working in a growing African business
